Sculptor. Born in 1962 in Maebashi City. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1986 and completed Art Research with a Concentration in Sculpture at the Graduate School of Tama Art University.
Held solo exhibitions almost every year since 1990. A part-time lecturer at Yokohama University of Fine Arts (2014?present). As a special lecturer in the sculpture course at Tohoku University of Art and Design(2017-21), he also focuses on art education, teaching at junior and senior high schools.
Ooshima is a sculptor specifically working on the series ‘FAKE FUR’, where animal skins are expressed in wood carving.
In his work, the ‘inside’ of the sculpture does not represent bones or flesh, but rather the skin, which is the surface layer, or the cloth hung on something. This asks viewers what sculpture is, even though it excludes the conceptual ‘axis’ of traditional sculpture and the ‘inside’ including bones and meat.
Also, as the title ‘FAKE FUR’ suggests, Ooshima says sculpture is ‘sculpture’ and the sculpted motif is not an animal but an imitation sculpture.
By sculpting animal skins and cloths, he visualizes the concept of ‘skin’ in sculpture and attempts to update the traditional concept of sculpture to create new sculptures.
